Belfast Murals

There is a rich history in Belfast that is literally being painted over in an attempt by the British to forget the violent past in the country and move to a more peaceful future. Although I agree with the desire to end violence between the two sides of Northern Ireland, it is sad to see those who would rather forget this history in the country than remember it with the historic appreciation it deserves. What I am primarily referencing is the murals that were painted throughout the city and are now slowly being painted over.

The artwork is still of top quality, but without the political edge it previously held. For example, here we see this picture of King William.

It still tells us a story but not the same story of the mural that was previously posted in the same location. And according to BBC News was one of the more popular murals.

Notice these images from this wall which is a stop on many of the tours that run through the city.

And this one which is on the same wall, an advertisement for the local taxi services that provide many of those tours.

Walking through the city we can still see this form of art but based on the paint, it is obvious many have been recently painted. At least they are still painting them, and hopefully they won't disappear completely.

Not quite like the old ones, but I support the message in this one.

End Forced Evictions Mural

This one looks cool. Ninjas with rifles. I was on a moving bus at the time, so couldn't quite get a good shot of it.

Probably doesn't really count, but took a picture of it anyway,

There was a series of these chalk ones that were pretty cool.
