Belfast Murals

There is a rich history in Belfast that is literally being painted over in an attempt by the British to forget the violent past in the country and move to a more peaceful future. Although I agree with the desire to end violence between the two sides of Northern Ireland, it is sad to see those who would rather forget this history in the country than remember it with the historic appreciation it deserves. What I am primarily referencing is the murals that were painted throughout the city and are now slowly being painted over.

The artwork is still of top quality, but without the political edge it previously held. For example, here we see this picture of King William.

This set of murals are next to each other and it a stopping point for the tours that run through the city, and the hop-on and hop-off bus I took to view them.

And this one which is on the same wall, an advertisement for the local taxi services that provide many of those tours.

Walking through the city we can still see this form of art but based on the paint, it is obvious many have been recently painted. At least they are still painting them, and hopefully they won’t disappear completely.

Not quite like the other ones, but I support the message in this one.

Ninjas with rifles. I was on a moving bus at the time, so couldn’t quite get a good shot of it.

Probably doesn’t really count,as it looks like standard graffiti but took a picture of it anyway.

There was a series of these chalk ones that I found to be creatively done.
