Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road
I’ve been in Dublin for almost two months now, and with the efficiency of the mass transit system, and the lack of need for a vehicle my time behind the wheel was most recently before leaving Seattle.
Now that I have finally found an apartment (story on that adventure to come later) it was time to get behind the wheel of a vehicle. In Seattle, we have Zip Car and other car-sharing services that allow people to grab a car from the Zip Car locations and use them for limited time periods and only pay for usage. In the US I never needed the service though, since I owned my vehicle and motorcycle. Here in Dublin, it is a different story, and so I signed up for the GoCar service and chose yesterday to use it for the first time.
Reserving the vehicle was easy enough through the website, although it was messed up that they don’t have an app for my phone. I am going to assume that will be coming at a later date. At the car, swiping my GoCar card across the pad on the windshield I was let into the vehicle and was on my way to pick up some items from my temporary apartment and move them to my long-term apartment.
Two months into my time in Ireland, it was time to move from my temporary housing into a permanent apartment. Although I didn’t have a lot of belongings—a guitar some clothes, and other miscellaneous items—to move, there was still enough that a vehicle would be required, and possibly a couple of trips. Sure, I could have tried to talk one of my new coworkers into assisting me, and a few I’m sure wouldn’t have minded much, but it felt a little rude. As fun as the idea of dozens of trips on mass transit sounded, along with hauling each item on my back, the idea was a little daunting. So, it seemed a good time to have my first right-hand drive, left side road experience.
Knowing enough ahead of time that a vehicle might be needed at points, a GoCar sharing service was the perfect way to go rather than renting a car for the day. Reserving the vehicle was easy enough through the website, although it was messed up that they didn’t have an app for my phone. At least at the time of this writing they didn’t. I am going to assume that will be coming at a later date. But back to the story; the reservation process was quick—select location, pickup and drop-off time—and from there, I was good to go…
