The Puffins of Saltee Island

A few weekends ago I had the opportunity to visit the Saltee Islands which are located just south of Ireland via a 15-minute boat ride. The main purpose of the visit was to see these cute things… the Puffins.

However, the island has an interesting history as well. Situated approximately 5 kilometers off the coast of Kilmore Quay Co. Wexford. The larger island Great Saltee is the most famous bird sanctuary in Ireland and is very popular with day-trippers and birdwatchers. The Islands are privately owned. Luckily the owners allow bird watchers to take day trips out to the island. However, the first people to have settled on Saltee did so during the New Stone Age, about 3500 to 2000 BC.
